Extremely Easy Ways of Removing Tonsil Stones - By: Brad Hooton

Tonsilloliths, the word is quite big and horrifying, but the disease is small and curable. I know that many people suffer from them, but very few know how they are formed. Your tonsils are gland-like structures in the back of your throat. You have a tonsil located in a pocket on each side of your mouth. Tonsils are made of tissues that contain lymphocytes (cells in your body that fight off infections). Medical experts believe that the
tonsils play a role in the immune system and are meant to function like nets, trapping incoming bacteria and virus particles that are
passing through your throat. During an infective stage these pits become wider and bigger, resulting in debris and mucous from post-nasal discharge accumulating. Bacteria finds its way into this deposited matter and over time tonsil stones are formed. Do not panic as removing tonsil stones are no longer a big task.

Tonsil stones are a lot more common than most people think. The thing is most people often go undiagnosed because they do not
cause much of an inconvenience. But, in some (and probably you), they can cause tonsil pain and halitosis (bad breath), and
significantly impact the quality of the sufferer’s life.

Tonsil stones appear more frequently in adults than in children and most small ones do not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. Even when they are large, some tonsil stones are only discovered incidentally on X-rays or CT Scans. However, when they are left untreated they will begin to cause some very unpleasant symptoms.

Most doctors agree that the tonsils often do not perform their job well. In many instances, they become more of a medical hindrance
than of benefit. It may be that tonsils evolved in an environment where humans were not exposed to as many germs as we
encounter today as a result of living in areas with relatively high populations.

Removing tonsil stones is easy and can be performed at home with a little extra care. Many people have a habit of scraping their tonsils and extracting the stones. But this is not a hygienic method and may cause secondary infection. If you are persistent on using this method, wash your hands using an anti-bacterial soap and dry them thoroughly. Instead of finger nails, using a soft brush to rub the part where you feel the stone is lodged also helps in removing tonsil stones.

Another method of removing tonsil stones is using a cotton swab/bud and squeezing the tonsils till the stones fall out. It is always good to soak the cotton swab in hot water before doing this technique so it prevents cotton strands sticking to the tonsils.

Have you heard of the Waterpik Irrigator? This is high-tech device used for removing tonsil stones more accurately. Always check the pressure level before you use this machine as high pressure will lead to damage of the tonsils. WARNING: Do not go above your irrigator’s lowest setting.
Anything greater may cause your tonsils to bleed and become infected.

Sometimes these stones are too persistent and unresponsive to all these methods, in that case consult your physician. Surgical removal is also an option for removing tonsil stones.
