Extreme lateral lumbar fusion or XLLF is a 1-3 hour surgical procedure used to treat painful disc degeneration and other spinal conditions. If your surgeon suggests this surgery for treating your back pain, you have to undergo some tests and preparation.

You have to undergo a medical, neurological and psychological examination along with a chest x-ray, EKG and blood tests. You will have to stop any aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications you were taking everyday at least a week before surgery.

After surgery

After spending 1 -1 ½ hours in the recovery room, you will be given a PCA pump to regulate the pain control medication you use till you get out of bed on the same day as surgery. Usually you have to stay in the hospital for 2-3 days.

You will then be prescribed a brace or corset to restrict bending and help the healing of fused area. You will also be provided the required prescriptions and discharge instructions. Avoid twisting and bending backwards. You will have to start physical therapy after the first visit you make with your doctor after surgery.

How fast you recover from extreme lateral lumbar fusion depends on your health, age and the extent of surgery. Even your return to work depends on your overall health and the work you do.

However do remember that whatever spine surgery you undergo for back pain, it does not completely eliminate back pain; it only helps reduce your pain and discomfort.
