Extras, or as they sometimes prefer to be called, background artists, do work which can be rewarding, fun, glamorous and very hard work.

One rewarding part of being an extra is that it can pay quite well. A full day on a major feature film for example will often earn you in excess of £100. There are also lots of extra payments for all sorts of extras. For example, if you have to spend a long time in make-up or wardrobe or if you are obliged to wear any of your own clothes, you could receive additional sums of money.

The fun part is that you will be working on amazing sets. It is often a bit like being in a theme park. You will find most people who work as extras are great company and you will also find that you often have a lot of time on your hands. During the day, you may only be on set for an hour or less, which means you can spend the rest of the time reading or whatever other leisure activity takes your fancy.

The glamorous part of being an extra speaks for itself. You will be rubbing shoulders with famous actors and have the opportunity to see yourself on the television or cinema screen.

There is hard work as well. For example, you might have to spend the day in the freezing cold acting (and dressing) as if it’s the middle of the summer. It is also possible that you might have to occupy some uncomfortable position in clothes that you would not normally even consider wearing. For instance, an extra in a medieval battle scene could have to endure a degree of discomfort in their duties.
