Panic is a symptom of stress. If you lead a really chaotic, stressful life, your chances of having an attack are increased. Attacks can happen at any time. Many people who suffer from agoraphobia (the fear of public places), experience anxiety attacks when they venture into a situation they are not comfortable with. A lot of times, it can strike even while laying in bed, trying to sleep.

Young people who smoke, may have a greater risk of developing this condition. When smoking cigarettes, heart rate increases and breathing may become more difficult. However, quitting smoking can also lead to episodes due to the stress involved with withdrawal.

Some of the symptoms are racing heartbeat, sweating, shortness of breath, tingling, and an overwhelming fear that you are going to die or lose your mind and never be able to recover it. Most people who suffer from panic disorder may experience anxiety attacks on a regular basis. Others may find their attacks are triggered by certain things.

You don't have to be an agoraphobic to fear having an attack in a public place. Attacks can be gone as quickly as a minute or last up to fifteen. Knowing that other people are watching you have a melt-down, can cause even the most outgoing, sociable person to cringe.
