Exploring Bodrum Peninsula - By: SallyN

Bodrum Peninsula is located on the south-west coast of Turkey and is fast becoming one of the most sort after European holiday destinations. It is lucky enough to be surrounded by two oceans, the Aegean and the Mediterranean Sea.

In addition to recreational activities, the array of water sports and the Bodrum nightlife, the area has many tranquil coves, family beaches and picturesque towns with secluded sea-view Bodrum hotels.

‘Must See’ Towns & Villages

Gumusluk
Gumusluk stands on the classical site of the ancient Carian city of Myndos. Unfortunately there is not much left from the city of Myndos, whose seafront sections slid into the sea after an earthquake. Remains of the ancient harbour walls are scattered at the base of the headland just to the north and west of the village. These remains are particularly appealing to snorkelers and divers. Other historical sites which are still standing include the stadium, the theatre and a Byzantine church which today has been restored as a cultural centre.

Due to its archaeological importance, Gumusluk is protected against any further development and therefore, has retained its original appearance and traditional village charm. Today, there are many great fish restaurants along the seafront which are very popular with both locals and visitors. It provides the perfect place to relax and unwind whilst watching the sunset.

Yalikarvak
Yalikavak is former fishing port positioned in the North West corner of Bodrum Peninsular (just 18km from Bodrum). It is one of the least developed spots in Bodrum and combines traditional charm with contemporary comforts. A number of buildings have been delicately restored, one being an old water cistern which has now been converted into a modern gallery, displaying works of local and national artists.

The restaurants in the town centre and on the sea front are popular with both locals and tourists alike. The charming coves of Tilkicik, Pasa and Agacbasi are are definitely worth visiting as is the nearby village of Geris. If you want to experience Turkish culture make sure you visit the Yalikavak market held every Thursday which is popular for its Denzili produced cloths.

Gulluk
Gulluk, which means ‘place for roses’, is located just 20km from Bodrum airport. It is a picturesque fishing village containing quaint houses painted in white and trimmed with purple. Unlike other areas in Bodrum, Gulluk has been untouched by mass tourism and is a great place to escape, retreat and relax on one of the many sandy shores.

Gulluk’s promenade is lined with sea front restaurants featuring fresh local fish on the menu. The old port at Gulluk is a centre for trade, there are a number of fish farms located in the town which produce sea bass, sea bream and caviar and are exported around Europe. The area is also perfect for growing orange, almond and olive trees and there is also an olive oil factory in Gulluk which is also sold over the European Union.

These are just a few villages/towns which you should visit if you are holidaying in the beautiful region of Bodrum Peninsula. Others include Guvercinlik, Gumbet and Gundogan. If you are spoilt for choice with which area to visit, you will definitely be spoilt for choice with the type of accommodation to choose from. There are a range of small guest houses and luxury Bodrum hotels situated overlooking the many bays across the coast.
