Explore the Mysterious Meri Snow Mountain in Shangri-la - By: Grace Fan

Meri Snow Mountain, in Shangri-la of Yunnan Province, lies between Nujiang and Lancang rivers encompassing thirteen peaks rising over 6,000 meters above sea level. Kawakarpo, the main peak with an elevation of 6,740 meters, is the highest peak in Yunnan. The upper part of the mountain is snow-capped all year round and the lower part is covered by the lush vegetation of trees and bushes. Among the forest intersperse natural grasslands where bears, white partridges, river deer, lesser pandas and some other animals live.

Meri Snow Mountain is world-renowned for its loftiness, magnificence and mysteriousness. In the early 1930, an American scholar praised Meri Snow Mountain as “the most beautiful mountain in the world”. Magnificent glaciers stretches from the top to the foot of the mountain, like white dragons wiggling in the boundless forests. Qudenggong Temple and Gunmading Temple at the foot of the mountain are the two temples where Tibetans worship the holy mountain. The Kawagebo Peak is said to be protector of Tibetan Buddhism. It looks like a magnificent and towering pyramid and is veiled by the clouds, which makes the mountain more beautiful and mysterious. In addition, the Kawagebo Peak, praised as “god of snow mountains”, is one of the eight saint mountains in Tibetan area.

Meri Snow Mountain has four large glaciers, namely, Mingyong, Sinong, Niuba and Nongsong which are rare modern glaciers in low altitude (2,700 meters) and latitude. The largest and longest one is Mingyong Glacier which stretches from the top of the mountain to the forest area. When summer is coming, glaciers melt and thousands of glaciers suddenly collapse and fall down. At present, because of global warming and numerous visitors, the melting of glaciers is accelerating, which makes experts and the local people worried.

Meri Snow Mountain is a holy mountain in the mind of Tibetan. There are many folk stories related with the mountain. Here is a place with a diversity of religious beliefs. Besides the Tibetan Buddhism, other regions like Islam, Dongba and Christianity peacefully co-exist in the area of Meri Snow Mountain.

Meri Snow Mountain attracts many travelers around the world every year, however, its arduousness refused all people who want to see its real face. This is the Meri Snow Mountain.
