Expensive Bank Charges Add To Debt Problems - By: Jonathan Walker - Big Blue Tomato

The last thing that you will want to see when you take a peak at your bank statement at the end of the month is the sight of a charge for bouncing a cheque or going overdrawn. Some find that a charge takes them overdrawn, and then they are charged for that, like a chain reaction of fiscal badness. For people that are in a financial mire, and trying to make the bank happy, it is a depraved situation that can end up costing thousands.

If you are looking for some kind of crazy phenomenon in business, then look no further than all the companies that are prepared to support people that have had loads of charges imposed on their account. Such companies function by way of approaching peoples banks and recovering the wrongly applied charges. This is done at a cost of 15-20% of the amount that actually gets recovered. Such claims companies are wholly reliant on the fact that the banks should only actually be charging people for the cost that the bank is faced with, for administering the charge, as opposed to the amount that they want to charge, in order to benefit from a customers financial mismanagement. If you were to look into the actual financial benefit for the banks, it can be somewhat startling. It costs about £5.00 for a bank to send a letter of notification, in the event of a customer going over their overdraft, but what they actually charge is around £30.00. So if someone has received such charges then they are legible to claim back the last six years worth of charges.

There is a consumer group called Which? And they often publish reports on various things. They have been delving into the world of bank charges, and found that a massive 85% of people claiming bank charges have been successful, and received all if not some of their money back. In cases where the claim is denied, it can be referred to the Financial Services Ombudsman, who will act as adjudicators. The report was really informative, and it revealed that the people who do not apply to have their charges refunded, are only not doing so because they are scared of what the banks will do to them. As daft as it may sound, it is not wholly unwarranted, as an individual who claimed back £200.00 in charges, was subsequently informed by the bank that the account would be closed after a month. But even in this draconian instance, the bank were maid to pay the person a further £1000.00 in compensation, and reinstate their bank account. The banks are just compensating the people who ask for their money back, and are not interested in contesting it all in a court of law, as they know how incorrect they all are.

If a person has managed to accumulate say, £20,000 worth of debt, then the chances are that a fair amount of this debt has probably been accumulated through bank charges. Why should you be having to pay massive amounts of interest on the amount that you have been charged in wrongful charges. It is also worth elucidating, that you can still claim charges back from a financial institution that you no longer bank with.
