The primary problems that travellers face when living and working abroad are frequently health related issues. It is estimated that less than 30% of expatriates take out adequate expat health insurance. What many travellers fail to realise is that expatriate health insurance is more of a necessity than a choice, and failure to take out healthcare plans whilst abroad could result in large payouts for treatment and a lower standard of medical care.

The first step when choosing your expat health insurance is to make sure that the company is licensed and state approved. Be thorough when selecting your plan, as there are many factors to take into consideration, most commonly your current state of health and the country to which you are travelling. In other words a pregnant traveller living and working in America will require an entirely different plan to a traveller with respitory problems in India. Your previous travel experience and your age will also be a factor; particularly of you have developed immunity to certain health conditions abroad.

Another important consideration is your level of activity whilst abroad. If you intend to go mountaineering, hiking, white water rafting or partake in any other activity that poses the threat of injury, then you may require a plan that covers emergency medical evacuation and air ambulance cover.

Check the terms and conditions of the insurance plan. Many plans require you to foot the bill for medical treatment and claim back the expenses. For outpatient visits this is reasonable as the costs are unlikely to be high, however inpatient stays and operations can be extremely expensive and you could face very large payouts.
