Expat Health Care Insurance For US Citizens - By: Don Saunders

Expat health insurance is something that you should consider carefully before you move abroad. A lot of people travel abroad each year on holiday and find that they fall in love with their holiday destination. This is something which occurs all the time and you have to remember that your requirement for health insurance will not change no matter where in the world you are.

You are still going to face all of the same health risks abroad which you will face here at home but you may well meet some very different issues when it comes to the cost of your own healthcare and the healthcare of your family. One of the things which you certainly do not wish to end up with is being caught up in limbo.

For example, let us say that you are working abroad and that you are involved in a motor accident and suffer various minor injuries. The local police take you to the nearest hospital for treatment and, once the doctor has finished attending to your injuries, you are asked to pay your bill. Precisely how do you plan to pay this bill?

If you are living abroad and continue to retain your US citizenship then it is unlikely that be entitled to free treatment even in a country with a system of free healthcare. You may of course turn to your health insurance from back home however, unless you have only been away from home for a relatively short time and are able to claim this bill as vacation cover, it is unlikely that your insurer will meet your claim. At the end of the day you will have to pay the bill in cash and simply hope that you have enough money.

The wise thing to do is to consider getting health insurance cover that is specifically designed for expatriates like yourself before you set off abroad. There are various health insurance programs available which cover just about every situation you can imagine and that will provide you with a great deal of peace of mind.

If you are going abroad to work for a company which is based here in the states then they may well have a health insurance plan designed to provide cover for you and your family while you are working and living abroad. This is clearly something which you need to investigate as many employers will cover at least part of the healthcare and medical costs of their employees abroad.

If your employer does not provide the medical insurance cover that you require, or if the question of provision by an employer is not relevant, then you might like to do a search on the Internet for expat health insurance and you will find a mass of information from various brokers and companies who will be more than willing to assist in providing a suitable expat medical insurance plan.

Should you decide to purchase expat health insurance online however you must read through the particulars of any plan carefully and be satisfied that you know just what is covered and what is not. You certainly do not want to arrive at your destination and then find when you make your first claim that the insurance you have bought does not cover you for your claim or that it is void in your chosen country.

Finally, make sure that you start looking for an expat medical insurance plan as soon as you know when and where you will be going so that you receive the best deal.
