Euro Lottery everyones Favourite - By: lee may

The Euro Millions lotto was in the beginning formulated by the national lotteries of France, Spain and the UK and was unveiled in February 2004. The inaugural Euro Millions lottery draw occurred on February 13th 2004 in Paris. The United Kingdom, France and Spain were the only three countries partaking at first but lotteries from Austria, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland also committed to the draw in October 2004.

The Euro Millions or the European lotto, as it is commonly known, gathers the ticket sales of the 9 participating European countries resulting in a mammoth EuroMillions jackpot. With the number of countries joining the EU on the increase, this will without a doubt lead to new states registering with the EuroMillions lotto. An increase in the quantity of people playing the EuroMillions lotto will lead to a further growth of the already huge EuroMillions jackpots.

How To Play The Euro Millions

Every participant is required to pick 5 main numbers from 1 to 50 and 2 “Lucky Star” numbers from 1 to 9. During the draw, 5 main and 2 lucky star numbers are then selected at random from two draw machines containing numbered balls.

How The Prizes Are Allocated

The chances of winning the EuroMillions lotto jackpot is a distant 1 in 76 million but the odds of winning any prize is a reasonable achievable 1 in 24. If the jackpot is not won in a given week, it is carried forward to the next week which results in an ever increasing Euro Millions prize fund. New rules brought in during February 2007 limit the number of consecutive “rollovers” to eleven, with the jackpot rolling down to lower prize levels in the eleventh draw if the prize is not won.

The new rules also initiated Euro Millions "Super Draws" which occur twice yearly and offer jackpots in the region of £100 million. The difference with “Super Draws” is that the jackpot must be won in the week of that draw; consequently, if no ticket holder manages to match all the numbers drawn then the jackpot will be paid out to the next tier in the prize structure.

Notable Euro Millions Wins

• On the 8th of February 2008, the “Super Draw” jackpot of €130 million was secured by 16 persons who matched the 5 main numbers and 1 “Lucky Star” number.

• In August 2007, a 40 year old former Royal Mail postal officer from Scotland won a EuroMillions jackpot of €52.6 million. Up till now, this is the largest lottery win ever in the UK.

• On the 17th of November 2006, after rolling over 11 times, the Euro lotto jackpot arrived at €183 million and was split among 20 fortunate ticket buyers.

As a rule, to partake in the Euro Millions lotto you would have to be a citizen of one of the nine participating member nations.
