It’s unavoidable. Everyone experiences conflict at some point. Many people do not realize the disagreements are actually part of having a healthy relationship. Since no one on this earth is perfect, there is no way for a pair of people to agree all the time. Because of this undeniable fact, you should focus your energy on learning conflict resolution skills instead of trying to avoid disagreements altogether.

When you find yourself within a conflict with another person, the following points can come in handy.

1. One of the most important things to do is listen. Listening to another person can be difficult, but it is essential to resolving disagreements. By focusing your attention on what they are saying, you are not only learning how they are feeling and what the conflict is resulting from, but you are also showing the other person that you want the fighting to stop.

2. Another thing to avoid is bringing up the past. Some people think by keeping score and throwing previous mistakes on another’s face that the other person will back down and apologize. In truth, this has the opposite effect. Having one’s past errors slung at you is hurtful and enraging. You need to remember that it does not matter who is right and who is wrong. Both parties will lose if this relationship is ended over something that could have been resolved. During conflict resolution, remember to only discuss the things that are related to the current problem. This will help you avoid creating more problems.

3. A great skill to learn is how to pick your battles. Fighting can be exhausting so before starting an argument, consider if the point you are trying to make is really that important. Is having your wife understand what al dente means when it comes to pasta important enough to risk your marriage? No. Rationalizing in this way can help you avoid conflicts that only end up wasting your energy and damaging vital relationships.

4. One of the most important things to work on is forgiveness. There is no way to resolve a conflict if both parties are not willing to forgive the other. Many people develop the mindset that the only way to solve a problem is to punish the offending person. Hurting someone can never end your pain. In fact, it only leads to more emotional stress as many people experience regret and guilt after getting even. Instead decide if you are able to continue with the relationship. If you cannot let go of the past, then it is time move on.

If you do not experience any sort of conflict in your relationship with someone else that is not a good thing. It means one or both of you are holding back your feelings. This can lead to larger and more explosive fights in the future. It is best to resolve any pent-up issues now before the damage becomes irreparable. Using the conflict resolution skills discussed above, you can avoid destroying your bond with others when disagreements arise.
