Back in Victorian times, conservatories were for the very rich, who stocked them with delicate plants and enjoyed the luxurious tropical foliage as they entertained guests in their grand conservatory, some of which were larger than some present day houses.

These days, hardwood conservatories are a pleasure for many in the south west, and you don’t have to be a Victorian land owner to have one of the top-end hardwood conservatories in Devon or Cornwall. In those days, the insulation and heat retention that we take for granted had not been invented, so they relied upon sunshine in the summer and huge, expensive heating systems during the rest of the year to keep their conservatories warm enough.

Despite these drawbacks, the Victorians did develop the lifestyle of conservatory living, and this is still an attraction for people these days. Hardwood conservatories in the south west offer a relaxed and enjoyable way of life in which weekends can be spend pottering about amongst the house plants, or just sitting and enjoying the space and light of the conservatory.
