Enamelware - By: Rutland

If, for any reason, you find yourself watching daytime television, you will quickly discover that the programmes not concerned with buying, renovating and selling houses are about antiques. Antiques may be more frequently called collectables, if they look suspiciously like tat. Any prolonged exposure to daytime television through illness, unemployment, retirement or being a student could make you quite an authority on a wide variety of articles from Rupert Annuals to Clarice Cliff (a designer of art deco ceramics in case you were wondering.)

Something which seems to have a long shelf life is enamelware. This is not surprising as it is built to last. It is very distinctive and useful as props as it can sometimes set a scene all on its own.

If you are setting a scene on a barge, or more generally, canal, you will want to include many enamelware props. Certain of them are even known as ‘Bargeware.’ This term refers to the fact that these items were originally sold from a shop at Measham, next to the canal, and were particularly popular amongst the canal boat community.

At Keeley Hire, we have a particularly fine collection of enamelware props. Our collection of Bargeware includes buckets, pans, churns and watering cans. Enamelware is also used for storage and we have a wide selection of enamel bread bins, sugar, tea and cake jars. Enamel tea and coffee pots are rarely seen these days, but there was a time when every kitchen had them. We have many props which would adorn any period kitchen whether for film or stage.

Getting a set just right is never easy. It is essentially about paying attention to period detail and aesthetic principles. Some people prefer clutter, while others have more minimalist tastes. Whatever options are ultimately selected, creating verisimilitude is usually the goal.
