E readers were first introduced in 1971 as a result of "Project Gutenberg", which was an effort to archive and digitize cultural works, to encourage the production and distribution of digital novels. Some of the first novels authored were for specialty area and a limited audience, which were small and devoted interest groups. During the 1990's, the availability of the Internet made transferring electronic files easier. Libraries began providing free e Books to the patrons through their web sites and associated services but could not be downloaded.
In the early 2000's down loadable fiction and nonfiction writings were made available through public libraries. By 2010, 66 percent of the public libraries in the United States were offering e Books, according to the Public Library Funding and Technology Access Study.
In 2009, dedicated, user friendly reading hardware was being developed, and new models for e Books were being developed. By September of 2009, the Amazon Kindle and Sony's PRS-500 were the top selling reading devices. In 2010, Barnes and Noble Nook were on the verge of surpassing Kindle. Apple announced in early 2010 they had developed a multifunction device called the i Pad. Apple also announced they had agreements in place with 5 of the 6 largest publishers that would allow Apple to distribute e Books.
By July 2010, Amazon sales for e Books for the Kindle outnumbered the sales of hardcover books by 140 e Books for every 100 hardcover books. January 2011 Amazon reported e -Book sales surpassed paperback book sales. In the overall retail scheme of things paperback books outsell hardcover and books, with e-Books representing 8.5 percent of the book sales.
E readers are electronic devices that have WI-FI capabilities to allow the download of electronic books and periodicals from the various e-Book sellers. The screens are adaptable to bright light to make reading easier without eye strain. They have a touch screen capabilities and high speed Internet access. Once the book is downloaded, the device is put in reading mode and it's like reading a hardcover or paperback book. Touch the screen to turn the page and even set a book marker to take up where you left off.
Today, not only are fiction and nonfiction books available as e Books, but so are college text books as well as books with proprietary information. The cost for e-Books can be as low as $0.99 and as high as thousands of dollars. The e-Book readers are terrific for those on the go as they can take their reading along on vacation, business trips or just a trip to the local diner for breakfast. E-book readers have made reading more convenient. All reading material can be carried on one portable device that recharges quickly.
