5S is a method of workplace organization that makes use of five Japanese principles: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke, or in English sort, straightening (or set in order), systemic cleaning, standardizing, and sustaining. These practices result in a dramatically increased level of efficiency in the workplace and a boost in the morale of the employees, plus a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Although the 5S method is pretty easy to understand at first glance, its actual implementation is not as easy as it seems. This can be attributed to a number of issues: lack of cooperation from all the employees, lack of awareness of all insights of the methodology, and failure in effective presentation on the part of the teacher.

To make implementation easier, practitioners of the 5S system have devised specialized presentations, games and simulations. These tools or devices allow employees to have a firsthand experience of the method before they actually practice it on the floor. This way, they can make mistakes without affecting the overall flow of the business processes. At the same time, they will have a chance to understand their mistakes and figure out solutions without the actual repercussions.

The 5S presentation is typically a slideshow that contains a comprehensive explanation of the 5S principles, complete with pictures and before and after scenarios. The best 5S presentations are interactive, allowing employees to associate the principles with audio-visual elements, which allow them to absorb, and more importantly, remember more information.

The 5S game, on the other hand, is usually a group game. It allows your teams to learn together and to work better together. 5S games motivate employees to use what they have learned individually in group or team setups in order to solve game questions. Games are usually included in the presentation kits.

Finally, the 5S simulation is much like the 5S game, except it concerns less hypothetical and more relevant problem-solving tasks. These tasks simulate how the actual workflow will be like so employees can come up with decisions to improve their workflow using the 5S principles. This, combined with games and an effective presentation, allows employees to effectively learn the 5S system.
