Effective Steps to Build Solar Panels - By: Dinesh Chauhan

If you think you cannot build solar panels just because you do not possess the technical expertise associated with the installation process, think again. Today, many solar panel guides are available. By referring to these guides, you can easily install a solar power system in your home. Buy a good guidebook with neat illustrations and clear step-by-step instructions. Besides, having basic carpentry and soldering skills will simplify the task of building solar panels.

Tools required to build solar panels:

The first step to building solar panels is to gather all required materials. You will need the following equipments to build solar panels:
Saw for cutting, plywood, soldering iron gun, paintbrush, Rosin flux pen, wire cutters, screwdriver, caulking gun, voltmeter and Plexiglas cutters drill.

Tips to help you build solar panels:

1. Cut the plywood (acts as backing material) such that all solar cells can fit in it.
2. Once all the plywood is cut as per required dimensions, use the paintbrush to apply the UV-ray protective varnish and allow it to dry for some time.
3. Next, you need to insert the solar cells. This process is important and you need to be careful while doing it. Apply flux to the bus strips on your solar cells using a Rosin flux pen. This makes solar cells adhere to the soldered tab ribbons properly. This simplifies the wiring process. Connect the solar cells to each other after all the wiring is in place.
4. Once all the cells are connected, affix them to the plywood panel using silicon caulk. Next, you feed two unattached wires into the plywood base.
5. Next, make a Plexiglas cover to envelope the solar panel. You can do this by securing the Plexiglas to the frame with silicon and screws. Drill screw holes into the Plexiglas before attaching it to the frame to prevent it from cracking.
6. Seal all the gaps in the frame using silicon. Drill a hole at the bottom of the panel to avoid rainwater and moisture from settling in the panel. This will protect the solar panel and make it more durable.

A Battery box also plays an important role in your solar panel set up. You need to have a DC input and a DC meter that match the voltage of your battery. A DC (Direct current) meter will enable you to convert the solar energy received by the panel into usable form and apply it to run various electrical equipments.

Another important factor is the location of the solar panels. Solar cells convert sun’s energy into electricity. Thus, the placement of the solar cells should be such that they receive maximum sun’s rays. Avoid installing your solar panels in an area that has many trees, as even a small amount of shade can reduce the amount of electricity produced.

All the materials required to build solar panels can be bought from a local hardware shop. You can also buy a DIY kit that contains all the materials required to build solar panels.
