Eczema :- Scratching the surface - By: Dazza Walker

The whole world over anyone can suffer from eczema; however, it typically appears in infants and young children. Also called contact dermatitis, eczema is actually a group of skin conditions. Despite the fact that eczema gives the impression of a condition that is spreadable and can be passed on it is important to remember that eczema is not contagious.

Symptoms related to eczema will depend on its form and the skin will suffer accordingly to the severity of the eczema. A person with mild eczema has dry, hot, and itchy skin. Severe eczema will be alot more painless because the skin will crack and bleed and as a result will take longer to heal and will inflame making it extremely uncomfortable.

Some types of eczema are listed below with brief notes for your attention.

Atopic eczema :- This is eczeme in its most common form, and it affects both children and adults alike. This strain of eczema involves very itchy and dry skin, which in turn, will cause redness and inflammation of the affected area.

Irritant contact dermatitis :- This type of eczema is reliant on an allergicness to different chemicals. This might come in the form of soap, bubble bath or certain perfumes etc, as well as stronger liquids like bleach.

Allergic contact dermatitis:- The symptoms are similar to those listed for atopic eczema and happens when the body natural defences attack a substance in the skin.

Infantile eczema :- Any parents will know this one all too well and is found in children under a year old. It looks sore and unattractive on a beautiful new born but doesn't really affect their comfort.

Reducing the frequency of eczema outbreaks and their severity is top of the list for any sufferer, but some life changes have to be made to promote this. For starters you could use a prescibed medication to help control any outbreaks, as well as following a strict skin care routine. Nextly you could avoid certain items of clothing that will cause the skin to sweat and itch and become generally uncomfortable. Also weed out certain cleaning agents and detergents that might leave chemicals in clothes and when wearing cause itching and discomfort. Dust mites can cause alot of discomfort to the skin so although I am sure your house is clean anyway, change bedding regularly and vacuum on a consistant basis.

Common treatments for people with eczema require moisturization of the skin and use of medications, if necessary. Treatment is usually based on a person's age, health, medical history as well as the type and severity of eczema.

Hopefully you find some of this information helpful and will help reduce future irritation.
