Hot on the heels of the news that Youtube are to start streaming live sports, it looks as though Microsoft are also looking to show live sports streams via the xbox 360 console. Microsoft are said to be in significant talks with Disney to stream ESPN’s live sports TV shows through the console. Its not all great news though as owners would have to pay a subscription before gaining access to the streams.

ESPN Coming To Xbox 360
To complement the service, Microsoft might develop tie-in games for ESPN, according to the New York Times source, although the company and Disney are still in the middle of negotiations so the facts are a little sketchy.

The initiative would be part of a larger strategy that has already included some live TV on xbox such as the Sky satellite tv broadcasts on the Xbox in the UK. Microsoft’s Mediaroom is also rumored to be coming to the Xbox 360 and would give gamers their IPTV service through their consoles.
Microsoft has declined to clarify the ESPN rumor but makes no secret of the fact that it wants “as much content as possible.”
Microsoft want to not only compete with rival console from Sony, the PlayStation 3 but also dedicated media hubs like Apple TV and Roku’s Internet Player. These devices, as well as North American Xbox 360s, still focus almost exclusively on pre-recorder content, such as rentals from the iTunes Store and Zune Video Marketplace or on-demand viewing from Amazon and Netflix.
Apple may be indirectly stepping up pressure on Microsoft as rumors have circulated of an iTunes TV subscription in negotiations that would supply downloads of most TV shows for a flat monthly fee.

Youtube have struck a deal with the Indian Premier League to show live cricket matches this spring. After the successful live transmissions of the live U2 concert and Alicia Keys concert last year which had viewer numbers of 10 million plus.
Now Youtube are getting into the lucrative and high demand live sports streams arena, Google and the India Premier League have announced a partnership that will allow YouTube to serve streams of Cricket’s most important annual tournament to all on the web who choose to see it.

Youtube to show Live Cricket
Starting in March, sixty Cricket matches will be streamed along with an expected sponsor who will pay handsomely for the privelage, possibly helping Youtube to make a profit in 2010.
Bruce Daisley from Google UK said:- “We’re keen to see how the community will take to live sport. There’s a real interest in live events, so we’re excited.”
If successful it could lead to more prestigious events and sports being streamed on the video giant, and would further distance its reputation as a funny videos website

If the Comcast aquisition of NBCU completes they will not prevent users accessing Hulu and the deal will not affect cable prices. A report in Broadcast & Cable which has aquired a confidential presentation says that the cable giant is trying to sweettalk legislators and the FCC. The report in effect says that if Comcast gain approval for the buyout of NBCU from parent General Electric, it will not significantly alter the competitive landscape.

Comcast Wont Kill Hulu. Honest
“Comcast does not and will not foreclose consumer access to any online Internet content for anticompetitive purposes.” That pledge and others come from Comcast in a document the company is using in meetings with legislators and the FCC about the deal to acquire a controlling stake in NBC Universal.
Of course, once the deal is done and Hulu is owned by Comcast, they are not discounting removing premium content or even turning it into a subscription based service.
