Dynamic Laboratories, All About Mechanical Testing In A Metallurgical Lab - By: Seo5.Consulting

There are two main reasons for using metal parts testing into a metallurgical lab. First, it might be done so if metal parts of products do not behave as expected, failing for unknown reasons. This is the point where you can use the services of a professional group like Dynamic Laboratories. The highly trained staff will work on carefully analyzing the possible problems by doing a series of mechanical tests as it follows:

• Tensile tensing

Using three machines, Instron 5586 300kN, 300 DX and Insight 5kN, this process will test the strength and ductility of materials. Any material types and sizes can be used. Dynamic Laboratories are also offering tensile testing for non-metal materials like ceramics, yarn, leather, rubber and the list continues.

• Bending hardness testing

To be able to test the indentation resistance of a material, Dynamic Laboratories staff tests the metal using hardness test. This will provide valuable data about the heat treatment of the material, data which is useful in industrial applications.

• Impact testing

This is one of the most important tests a part designer must do before releasing the product, but is it also very hard to quantify it. The testing will provide data like absorbed energy, percentage shear area and lateral expansion of the part.

• Fracture toughness test

Using both linear elastic fracture mechanics [LEFM] and elastic plastic fracture mechanics [EPFM] approach, Dynamic Laboratories are testing the amount of stress needed to propagate an already existing flaw in the metal part.

• Stress and Creep Rupture testing

Using ATS Series 2320 Creep Testing, in the Dynamic Testing metallurgical lab the metal part is placed at constant tension at a high temperature for a long period of time. This way, when a slope of curve is detected, the process stops and the time for the flaw is calculated. The longer the time, the better the product is.

• Flexural Tests

Flexural tests are used for testing the properties of materials like polymer, wood, brittle or composites. The process consists in using MTS Insight 5 to create tensile stress in the convex part and compression stress on the other side, the concave part. This way, an area of shear stress will be created along the middle line of the product.

• Fatigue Testing

The Dynamic Testing professionals are using MTS 810 to provide designers with a prediction of fatigue life of the metal part. This is possible by putting the component to face vibrating and oscillating forces which is creating a load different from the static load type.

• Metallographic examinations

Metallographic examination, also known as metallography, is the process of examination on both the surface and the core of the metal part to find defects. The conformance with required specifications is standing by result of this examination.

As noticed from above points, there are a series of mechanical testing that must be done to ensure the quality and resistance of a metal part. It is highly recommended to use a dedicated team as Dynamic Laboratories to be provided with detailed and accurate results.
