A person who collects blood and other samples for laboratory analysis is referred as phlebotomy technician. Being a phlebotomist, one can work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, blood banks or any such medical facility.

There are certain duties that a phlebotomy technician has to perform efficiently. They have to collect and send blood and other samples for laboratory testing and keep the patients records updated. Keeping update knowledge of drug testing laws while giving instructions to the patients also adds to the duty of the phlebotomist. Some of the other duties include, checking the patients pulse rate, sterilize and assemble the equipment such as needles, cotton, gloves and gauze. These phlebotomists also handle the patients, give instructions and assist the doctor in diagnosing the patient, schedule appointments for the doctors and so on.

The minimum requirement of pursing a career as a phlebotomy technician is a high school diploma. There are many vocational colleges and universities which offer certification and degree course in phlebotomy. The duration of the degree program is fifteen weeks. However, there are few states, which do not require formal training, there candidates can opt for on-the-job training. During the training programs, the students expand their knowledge and learn how to draw blood and needle techniques. It is mandatory for all the trainings programs to follow the rules and regulations set by the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).

The demand of phlebotomy technicians have increased in the past few years and is expected to boost by 14% by the end of next decade. The average annual salaries of the phlebotomists are $26,297. Management jobs in phlebotomy have an average earning of $35,000 annually.

The job of phlebotomy technician is very challenging. It needs dedication and plenty of hard work. Keeping the focus in the job will open many doors in the field with satisfying monetary rewards.
