Driving With Caution - By: David Williams 2

For instance, one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents on highways is the fact that those who are trying to merge onto the highway from an entry ramp do so at a speed which is often too slow. In many cases, I have actually even seen people who are trying to merge, stop and wait until there are absoltely no cars behind them before they proceed. This is incredibly dangerous!

While it is more rare than not, there have been instances in which people who are driving too slow are actually pulled over by the police because they are creating a danger not only for themselves but for other drivers who are on the roadways. For example, when you are driving on a major highway, most people know from experience that the far left lane is almost always used for passing. Seldom are you supposed to actually stay in the left lane the entire time- especially if the roadway is a two-lane road. However, there are people out there who either aren't aware of this or who simply do not care what the rules are. The result? Traffic starts to get backed up and drivers start to get agitated, thereby leading to increased instances of road rage. How awful it would be to know that you may have started all of this!

One possibility for why overly cautious drivers sometimes find themselves in the far left lane driving slowly is because they see that there isn't quite as much traffic in that lane. I once got stuck behind an older woman who looked as if she was having trouble seeing over the steering wheel as she held up a long line of traffic by driving almost 45 miles per hour in the far left lane of a busy highway on which the speed was 60 miles per hour. Eventually, I calmly flashed my brights at this woman, at which point she moved over into the other lane. Traffic then picked back up as it should have, but not after several people passed her and communicated some disparaging remarks by way of sign language.*

There are also those drivers who are nervous drivers. Because they are nervous, they overcompensate in their driving. For instance, I have noticed that when I am driving with my boyfriend and he is behind the steering wheel, he will actually slow down at an intersection even though he has the green light. “What are you doing?” I will ask. It turns out that he does this out of habit because a few years ago, he was blindsided by someone who tried to make a turn at the last minute in an intersection when he was going through it, thereby hitting his vehicle. As a result, he always approaches interesections overly cautiously. I say 'overly' here because by slowing down at a green light, it could catch other drivers behind him off guard, thereby causing the very accident he was hoping to avoid!
