Drinking Some Herbal Teas May Help Reduce Stress - By: Will Lambert

Everyone views life differently, and what may be a stressful, negative event for one person, may be viewed by another as an opportunity to take positive action. For people who thrive on deadlines, experiencing the unexpected, and change in general, stress is likely a manageable sensation that can progress naturally to a satisfied state of relaxation after the event or encounter in question has passed. Alternatively, overwhelmingly stressful situations may literally be a way of life for some people, and this may lead to perpetual feelings of anxiety. Such feelings can be managed, however, by practicing simple but effective relaxation techniques.

How you perceive yourself, others, and the world around you will likely influence your reactions, and there is scientific evidence that documents the physical changes that are typically associated with stress. Chronic stress symptoms such as high blood pressure, can have an extremely detrimental effect on the body if experienced over extended periods. Reducing your intake of sugary, salty and fatty foods and eating more healthy foods, including drinking certain herbal teas, can help. You may think that sitting down with a cake, some cookies or a cup of coffee will help to reduce your anxiety, but in fact the reverse is more likely to be true.

Coffee, cola, energy drinks or other caffeinated may be useful as an occasional 'pick-me-up', but in the long run they aren't going to make you feel more relaxed. Accordingly, tea is often a better choice, and green or white herbal teas are particularly good for calming the nervous system and thus your entire body. As well as having a calming effect, these teas often contain a wealth of powerful antioxidants, minerals and other trace elements which will improve your physical health as well, leaving you better able to cope with life's stressors.

Taking just ten or fifteen minutes each day to have a cup of tea can significantly improve your mood, and some of the best choices include Chamomile, Lemon Balm, and Peppermint. St John's Wort is another very popular choice for those seeking a natural anxiety remedy, it is also said to help with insomnia and depression. Although some of these anxiety-relieving herbs are often supplied in capsule form, many people opt for herbal teas because the act of imbibing a healthy and tasty drink is relaxing in itself, as well as often being a social event.

While medical practitioners have compiled research supporting the biological changes that occur when people are feeling stressed and the benefits from drinking tea, many people around the world have demonstrated an understanding of this for centuries. Next to water, tea is the most popular drink in the world and in many countries it is regarded as the national drink and prized for its relaxing and healthful properties. Some studies have shown an increased life expectancy in those who regularly drink some types of tea (especially green and white teas which retain more antioxidants and phytonutrients than black tea). Realistically, you won't banish stress just by drinking tea, but as part of a regular routine you will find it will certainly help you to relax and improve your overall health.
