I remember when I got my first mood ring. It came with a little color coded sheet that explained what my mood was based on the color the top of my ring would turn. I thought that ring had the most amazing powers; it was always right. Thinking about my mood ring leads me to wonder about the potential aspect of "Mood Clothing." What if we could wear blouses that changed color and told everyone around us what we were feeling? I have not heard of any such clothing options hitting the market yet, however it is possible for us to wear colors that display our mood. There are specific characteristics associated with different colors, so by choosing to wear certain shades, we can either match our personality or perhaps try to create a new mood by wearing a color that can help us change our attitudes.

If you are going to an interview, where creating a solid first impression is a must, you should consider wearing a color that suggests power. According to Lindsey Shirley, Ph.D. and Dress and Humanity Professor at Utah State University, red is a powerful color. The personality characteristics red suggests are strength and persistence. You should wear red if you are someone who wants to take charge of life and move in a particular direction. Another color that might be suitable for an interview is blue. First of all, blue is a calming color and if you are the type who gets nervous in an interview, perhaps blue can help you relax a little. Blue is for those who are, or want to be, more optimistic and open to what might be ahead. Wearing the color blue implies a calm, open, trusting, and honest personality. Secondly, with the entire world seemingly turning corrupt these days, the number one trait employers look for in employees is integrity; trustworthiness is definitely important in the professional arena.

After the interview is over and it is time to get on with evening activities, you may find yourself wondering what to wear for that hot date with Mr. or Mrs. Right. Only you can decide if you want to wear a color that actually reveals your true personality or if you would rather wear a color that displays a different mood. Green is the color to wear if you are a flexible person. If you consider yourself, or would like to consider yourself, balanced and secure, green is the color for you. Those who wear green are displaying for everyone else the importance they place on balancing work and family life as well as a sense of security in his or herself. Another great date color would be orange. Wearing orange suggests a spontaneous, fearless, and adventuresome personality. If you want your date to assume you are the type of guy or girl who always is looking to try something new and stay out of the norm, orange is the color you are destined for.

Then there are those days when you just need to cheer up. Maybe the interview and the date did not go well. Wear yellow. Yellow is just one of those colors that invokes a smile, it is like the sun, lemon bars, sunflowers, baby ducks and elementary school buses. The best things in life are yellow. For someone who needs a lift and really wants to brighten their outlook to make life happier, more enjoyable or just full of cheer, yellow is the prescription color.

So the next time you find yourself standing idle in front of your clothes do not simply settle for the first shirt you see. Stop and think about your mood, or the mood you want to have throughout the day. Make a good evaluation of how you want others to perceive you. Then go ahead, pick a color, pick an outfit, pick your mood!
