Draft Proofing Sash Windows the Easy Way - By: Lawrence Korbus

When you realize that your energy bills are higher than you want to be paying and it feels like it is difficult to keep your home warm in the winter, you may need to consider looking into draft proofing sash windows. This is the process of covering the tiny gaps that allow cold air to enter into the home while squeezing the warm air out. It is almost not noticeable at first, but you will start to realize in time how much more difficult it is to keep the same home warm than it used to be. That, and you will see that you are paying more money for it as well.

The process of eliminating window draft is not incredibly complicated thankfully, and it really only requires you to go and purchase special strips designed for the exact purpose. You will have the option of getting the strips in several materials such as foam, metal, or plastic. The foam type are the cheapest to buy, but they don't last as long as the more expensive metal pieces. You need to be sure that you get the proper size as well, because it won't seal all of the gaps if you get strips that are too small. Of course, if they are too large they will get in the way and end up getting damaged due to protruding out.

If you need to stop sash window draft, that is a little more complicated because you need to remove the moving parts before you can apply strips and sealant. This can be difficult and if you don't know what you're doing it's a better idea to hire a professional handyman than try to guess the proper way to do it. Once the window has been successfully taken apart, you can apply a special sealant that will fill in even the tiniest gaps. You either have the option to apply strips with that as well or finish the job. It's up to you, but for a more thorough job you should at least add the foam strips. When you're done with that, you need to reassemble the window itself.

The whole task of proofing sash windows is not terribly difficult, but it can take a lot of time. If you have several windows in your home that are in need of this though, it might be more time than you actually have to put in. If that is the case, you are much better off hiring a professional handyman. They can get the job done very quickly, and that way you won't have to worry about buying the materials yourself. If you have a large job ahead of you, it will actually save you money to let a professional do it because they will be much more efficient and usually have all the materials necessary.

Either way, you will be glad once you have gotten rid of all sash window draught. It will help to lower your energy bills, but it will also help you to contribute in cleaning up the environment. You are doing this by being more energy efficient in your home.
