What is Doo-Wop?
The term doo-wop was institutionalized by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) in the early 1990’s. The term depicts an era in American culture during the 1950s and 1960s where architecture was heavily inspired by space-age designs and motifs. Other areas throughout the United States termed the era’s culture as, “Populuxe” or “Googie.” Some characteristics of buildings during this time period include:

• starbursts
• half-moon shapes, or boomerangs
• bright colors
• smooth, deep angles
• modern, curvy lines and sharp corners

The term doo-wop also refers to the genre of music that was very popular during the time period. Musical groups such as, “The Turbans” and “Carlyle Dundee and the Dundees” fell under the musical genre with songs that used the infamous “doo-wop” vocal melody throughout their songs.

What happened to Doo-Wop?
Like any other style or fad, doo-wop began to fade over time. However, hotels in Wildwood, New Jersey were newly erected with unique motifs and designs of the doo-wop culture. From plastic palm trees to prominently displayed, diamond-shaped muntin bars, the era continued to thrive throughout The Wildwoods. Today, Wildwood, New Jersey is home to over 200 hotels with doo-wop architecture. With the aid of several preservation efforts, these icons of history will be protected for many future vacationers.

Wildwood’s strong commitment to the preservation of doo-wop culture gives the area a unique and nostalgic appeal to visitors. Many families have been returning to The Wildwoods for several generations, giving them the opportunity to re-live memories each year. Wildwood, New Jersey hosts attractions such as world-famous beaches, a 1.8 mile boardwalk, amusements and theme parks. However, it is the reminiscence of past times that resound throughout the area that keep visitors coming back year after year.
