What is Doo-Wop?

The term depicts an era in American culture during the 1950s and 1960s where architecture was heavily inspired by space-age designs and motifs. Other areas throughout the United States termed the era’s culture as, “Populuxe” or “Googie.” Some characteristics of buildings during this time period include:

The term doo-wop also refers to the genre of music that was very popular during the time period. Musical groups such as, “The Turbans” and “Carlyle Dundee and the Dundees” fell under the musical genre with songs that used the infamous “doo-wop” vocal melody throughout their songs.

What happened to Doo-Wop?
Like any other style or fad, doo-wop began to fade over time. However, hotels in Wildwood, New Jersey were newly erected with unique motifs and designs of the doo-wop culture. From plastic palm trees to prominently displayed, diamond-shaped muntin bars, the era continued to thrive throughout The Wildwoods.
