Don't throw your phone in the bin, you could go to prison - By: Felicity Lightbody

'What? You mean I can actually go to jail for throwing a mobile phone in the bin?' Yes, it's that serious! In recent years, this country is considering passing laws that makes it a criminal act to improperly discard a used or unwanted mobile, that can be punishable by imprisonment and/or stiff fines. There are practical and purposeful reasons for this possible ordinance.

A mobile handset is a device made from non-biodegradable products that contains high levels of toxins and carcinogens, or cancer-producing agents. These elements often clog up much-needed landfills as well as its noxious fumes being spread into the air, endangering man and beast.

Just imagine large containers of liquid toxic waste chemicals being poured into a landfill adjacent to a nearby community, where hundreds or even thousands of inhabitants are endangered by such powerful chemicals. Now just imagine a whole case of mobile phones or two being dumped in the same landfill. It's the same thing.

Small wonder that more and more people are becoming what is now known as "environmental-friendly". You may have heard a lot of talk in recent years about "going green" to protect the environment. The above examples are a typical reason why. There are also various "green" organisations that are dedicated to impressing this issue on the public conscience.

What is the most effective and safe way to proper discard an unwanted or unused mobile? Through the process of phone recycling, or getting such devices into safe and responsible hands, who will know what to do with such products and put them to good and practical use. For example, there are mobile phone recycling companies who will fix your old broken phones and recycle the phones to less fortunate people or just use the phone (if it is beyond repair) to help with repairs of others, this way keeping down its cost to the environment in producing these materials.

Some recycling companies will send used mobile phones to under-developed countries, the military or nations suffering from natural disasters, such as the recent major earthquake in Haiti, in which thousands of mobile handsets were sent to that impoverished nation.

Some areas have recently enabled special drop-off bins designed exclusively for discarding used mobile phones, the trouble with these though is that you are potentially throwing away your money when a mobile phone recycling company, such as Mazuma Mobile, that give you money for recycling the phone with them. They will send you an envelope and you just put your phone in and send it back to them and wait for your payment.

Or one a personal note, you can give it to your loved ones; your spouse, another close family member or a close friend.

So as shown in the examples above, there are various ways one can properly and legitimately recycle a used mobile phone without throwing it in the bin, which is damaging to the environment and potentially soon to be illegal! It is environmental-friendly, practical and it makes the world a lot safer for you and me.
