When writing your CV it can be easy to get carried away with a little embellishment here and there and the odd stretch of the truth. Alternatively, apathy and laziness can also ruin your chances of selling yourself well to a company. Here are some of the things to avoid when writing your CV: Truth stretching This can be a fatal error. Expert recruiters will have a good sense of whether a CV sounds genuine and they will pick up the most basic facts. If you get selected at interview you are likely to get pinned down and if you haven’t thought it through it could be very embarrassing.

Truth stretching in reverse It is a common trait to undersell ourselves and if you have a referee who is likely to ruin your chances with faint praise, find another that you know will be positive and reflect your capabilities at the level you are applying for.

Laziness Make sure you proof read your CV. Spell check and grammar check won’t be enough as a CV does not follow standard sentence and paragraph structures. Proof read several times and get someone’s opinion before you send your CV. Flash CV designs An overly flashy CV design is more likely to land in the bin than in front of the recruiter. Only use photographs if you are applying for a customer facing role or are a model. Avoid colours, boxes, text effects and non-standard fonts. Keep it simple if you want to create a good CV that works. It should be the quality of the content that catches the recruiter’s eye. This will make them read on and want to meet you.
