Don't do this. Do this. Common Mistakes When Applying for A Merchant Account. - By: Colin A. Mexico

It should go without saying that a successful business selling products or services requires a merchant account. These days, customers prefer the convenience of credit cards. Without a merchant account, it's not possible to pay with plastic. With that in mind, it is important to get the terms of the merchant account right, or you will regret it later. Here are some common mistakes that new merchants make when signing up for a merchant account. Avoid them and you'll be better off.

Not Asking Important Questions

In the excitement of getting your business up and running, it's easy to accept the first offer and sign up right away. Don't. Have the processor go over the contract with you and answer any questions you have. Understand all terms and fees will be charged for various actions. Ask about customer service and research the processor's reputation. For information about their business practices, you can contact the better business bureau. Think about all questions you may have before you sit down with the application and representative.Cancelation fees are the most commonly overlooked fees, and can be very expensive if you terminate your contract early.

Don't Put Offers Side By Side

If you are approved by one processor, you will be approved by others. This is an example of why it's important to comparison shop. Evaluate the proposals thoroughly at home. It's impossible to got through the contact line by line while at a bank or on the phone with a processor. The offer will still be there tomorrow.

Not Asking for it in Writing

Even with the assumption that most merchant account providers are honest, it's still important to get the terms discussed in writing. For example, a representative may be unaware that a different representative offered a deal on something like equipment. A verbal deal may sound good, but is meaningless if it's not outlined accurately in your agreement.
Accept Free Things Thinking They're Getting A Better Deal

Sure, a free terminal is nice, but the savings may not be worth the expense in higher rates and fees. When comparing offers, don't consider the special offers or incentives. You'll get a more accurate view of your total costs.

By doing some homework, getting the right merchant account should be easy. Once you sign up you be stuck with that decision for the term, so make sure your choice is the right one for you.
