Domestic Job Descriptions - By: CardiffJobs

Domestic service jobs typically take place in a family household or in rare instances in Royal palaces. Most domestic service staff are paid by the head of the household, but on some occasions they may be paid by a company that the head of the household works for or owns. Home carers are often paid by the NHS, county councils or family members.

A Home Carer is somebody who assists with the care of a disabled or elderly person by visiting them at their home and helping them with day to day tasks that would otherwise prove challenging for them. They may be expected to do housework and to cook meals for the person they are caring for. It may also be necessary for a home carer to look after the financial transactions of their client by collecting their pension/disability allowance and arranging for the payment of bills. A home carer may also have to assist their client while they bathe or use toilet facilities. A home carer will also be expected to run various small household errands like feeding pets and collecting groceries. Generally speaking home carers are distinct from nurses, as they tend to have little or no formal medical training.

A Driver is responsible for bringing members of the household to their engagements. A driver may be on call at any time of the day and must hold a valid driving licence. Typically a driver will be expected to carry out tasks such as bringing children to and from school, collecting guests from the airport and bringing members of the family shopping and assisting with the carrying of bags into the house. Depending on the size of the household there may be more then one driver employed.

A Nanny is tasked with looking after the family’s children. A nanny’s role varies from household to household but typical duties include assisting the children with their homework, carrying out light housework duties and ensuring that the children are woken and prepared for school in the morning. A nanny must also alert the parents of any signs of illness or any seriously inappropriate behaviour she has noticed in the children.
