Does Personal Discipline Work? - By: InnerMindConsulting

Did you ever wonder how you could be motivated to start anything, but when it was time to finish the motivation had gone? Although this may be an exaggeration for most, I do think that most people can relate to this feeling. And from the new years resolution, to that realization that I need to pay bills, workout, or lose weight, I get that same feeling over and over. I can get even more frustrated when I see someone I know make it seem so easy!

So, in true human fashion, I've come up with a theory to explain this mysterious and baffling behavior: What if discipline is a myth, and those that 'discipline' themselves are really just choosing goals that are in the path of their pre-existing motivations? Those that are driven by 'discipline' may feel that I'm describing a magic bullet here, but I'm not. It's just as much work whether or not your motivations are engaged, but you now have the fuel to do the work. So, to those that are able to use their pre-existing motivations to drive the new goal it may feel like 'discipline', but without that motivator, 'discipline' just isn't enough.

And the next question for me becomes, 'How do I get my pre-existing motivators to drive my new goal?' The first step for me is to figure out what motivates me. I think that the trick here is to ignore the things you talk about and you wish you had... look instead at your actual behaviors. Look at all the things that you do and figure out how they benefit you. What do they do for you? I wonder if everything we do is designed to directly give us specific emotional feedback, and the things that we do all the time accomplish exactly what they are supposed to.

Second, I need to connect my new goal to my motivators. Easy to do, if you know how. Those that are able to do anything they put their mind to have already discovered how to do this for themselves. And for some of us, like me, it's not so intuitive, so we need someone to show us how it's done. The funny thing to me is that even all those that talk about how to motivate yourself miss the boat because they are trying to give you techniques and behaviors which you still have to discipline yourself to use. Those that do this naturally feel that it's as easy as sitting down and getting to work, not even noticing how they connected their motivator to the goal. For them it is an assumption and they can't even comprehend those that can't.

And this is yet another reason why I love hypnosis. The skilled hypnotist knows how to connect your motivator to your goal, and also knows how to teach you to do it for yourself! Imagine how good it would feel to be able to do anything you 'put your mind to', and being successful at it. I wonder how good it would feel to be able to say, 'I did it!'
