Does 'failure' mean 'failure' or is it one step closer to success? - By: Kaye Dennan

Small business owners dread the thought of failing. Many take it as a personal fault. During 2008 many people failed at their businesses and the reality is that the world economic crises caused the problem. With the right mindset you realise that if you do not fail at some things, you will never have successes either.

My hubby keeps telling me that even his mistakes are perfect!

ACCEPTING AND OVERCOMING FAILURE

When you start a home based business it is a given fact that you are going to make mistakes. If you understand this from the start, then you can look at your mistakes as part of your learning curve to success.

Everyone has different talents and will fail at certain things that others may find extremely easy, but that is OK, just make sure that you do not let your mistakes get your down.

I do realise that depending on the cost of the mistake, that can be easier said than done. Some people make mistakes work noting, like losing $1M, and others only $1, but each is a learning curve nevertheless.

Analyse your mistake, learn from it, and move on. Have you heard the phrase, every cloud has a silver lining. Well I have found that to the case so many times. So many times I have experienced the feeling of just not making it, then all of a sudden something really good happens and I am back on track with my business. Often doing better than before.

Sometimes we overlook our successes and focus on the failures. It is important not to let the negatives take over. Always remind yourself how good you are.

When I started working at home years ago, I tried several things. I made money at each, but I could see that my skills were not really in those businesses I was doing. It wasn't til I bought an internet business and started writing as a career that I really found something I loved. My failing there was not analysing how good I was at what I was attempting to do, and sometimes even consciously ignoring the actual thing that eventually made me give up the business.

One of the most memorable was a party plan giftware business. I had to carry some heavy boxes, and I knew from the outset that my back was not that good, and in the end I had to stop because of it. I saw this as failure on my part to acknowledge the fact that I had a bad back. But not being able to do this took me one step closer to finding something I now like to do.

The process of elimination may be the way you will have to find out what you really like doing. Often when setting up a small business we are so keen to start with our new idea that we do not stop and properly analyse the whole project.
