She remarked: "If you have young children and pets, make it easy on yourself by using camouflage colours and easy-clean flooring."

Meanwhile, when it comes to getting the paintbrush out to finish the look of their bathrooms, they should make sure they use colours wisely.

For example, light shades and textures can make a room look more sizable, while darker colours can give the impression of intimacy.

And more people may be redoing their bathrooms as part of home renovation projects rather than upgrading to a new house at present.

Since the onset of the recession, consumers have been less likely to make strides up the property ladder due to a lack of finances and the fact their homes may have fallen in value.
