Do You Need An External Data Back Up? - By: JayaKumar Patchala

Computer technology has certainly improved in the past few decades. Gone are the days when computers, data storage devices and peripherals used to occupy a lot of space and required a lot of care. Nowadays, you can easily get a notebook computer that weighs less than 6 pounds, but still has high computing power. However, one thing still causes a few worries. Hard drives still occasionally crash and frustrate users.

Hard drives are not perfect, although they are amazing example of mechanical engineering combined with electronics. Physical damage can easily occur since these hard disks are spinning at such high speeds such as 5400 RPM (Rotations per minute). It can also happen because of user's carelessness. The smallest interference while in use can cause damage in certain areas. Though the hard drive manufacturers incorporate several features to prevent the likelihood of a critical hard drive failure, they are not 100% effective. Sadly, physical damage is not the only reason why you may need to attempt hard drive data recovery. Many people accidentally wipe out their hard drives because they are not sure what they are doing. In addition, some badly written programs, viruses and poor maintenance of disk drive can damage the data on the hard drive.

If you have fair amount of hardware knowledge, and are not the one who messed up the hard drive in the first place, it may be possible for you to do your own hard drive data recovery. Keep in mind that to do this, you may need to fix your master boot record, or retrieve data from a physically damaged disk. If you cannot do this, then you will need to employ the services of a hard disk drive data recovery expert. Software is available to help you in data recovery. However, you have to use them carefully. Modern operating systems offers you a facility called 'system restore point', if your system becomes unstable after installing a software or feature. However, this can only help in a few cases. You may need to deal with problems such as invalid registry entries or bad sectors. Sometimes it is even difficult find the cause for a disk crash. Actually, if your system crashes and you do not actually recover data for a living, I would suggest you go straight to a hard drive data recovery expert. They are expensive, but compared to what you might be losing because of your disk crash... Its justified that you get an expert for data recovery. These people are specialized in what they do. You can save yourself from further messing up with the hard drive.

If you are not fortunate enough to find a data recovery expert in your locality, you know what can really help you save money if your hard drive does crash? Backing up your data. It is a sensible thing to do, even if you have some hard disk data recovery experts available. It is simply because external hard drives are getting cheaper. Typically, you get a 160 GB or 320 GB hard disk with your PC or Laptop. External hard disk drives are available up to 1 TB (1000 GB) in storage space and they are reasonably priced. You can backup your hard drive completely (even if you have two) on a single external hard disk drive. You can even synchronize the data between your main files and backup files frequently using software available with these external hard disk drives. These external hard disk drives are compact and sturdy enough for data backup purposes.

You should definitely consider an external back up. At least you will not have to search for hard drive data recovery expert and pay a huge amount that can buy you a few back up disk drives.
