Do You Need A Sports First Aider? - By: Rick Dahne

Having someone on hand trained to administer first aid for sports is hugely important. But just being on hand to treat an injury is not all that training in first aid for sports is about. A lot of the role of a responsible first aider will be to attempt to prevent injuries by using the right techniques to ensure that bodies are warmed up and being used in the right way.

However, injuries are always going to occur. Accidents will invariably happen and players will find themselves needing treatment. Whilst some clubs think that some water on a sponge and ‘running it off’ is enough, if an injury is not treated properly, it will no doubt get worse and end up causing the player and the club a lot more problems than it needed to.

The job of a first aider should include a lot more than just putting some ice on an injury. There should be recommendations of how to go forward and make sure the injury doesn’t turn from acute to chronic over the following days. There should also be knowledge of emergency procedures that can be furnished to both the home team and the visiting one.

Just having a first aider isn’t enough alone though. You will also need to ensure that you have an adequately stocked sports first aid kit and that it is replenished regularly. There is no point in having the right help on hand if they haven’t got the right tools to work with, and having a good sports first aid kit is one of the most valuable things your team can have.

So, the answer is yes, you really should have a first aider on hand at all times. So whether you find someone already trained or undertake a course yourself, make sure that you look after your team in the best and most responsible way.
