Do You Know How to Replace Sash Cords? - By: Lawrence Korbus

Do you know how to repair sash window cords? If not, you're not alone. The simple devices that we take for granted every day are actually in a pretty complicated spot but if you know how to get them out it is quite possible for you to repair or place them on your own. You do need to have a little bit of experience working with items like a knife, and you need to have a steady hand. Other than that though, it is fairly straightforward. The main thing you want to be careful about is remembering the order that you take things apart so you can put them back together in the proper order. This is probably one of the biggest mistakes you can make if you aren't careful.

The first thing to do is take off the window facing. This is one of the more difficult parts as it requires you to use the knife to cut through the trim. Be very careful when doing this part, as you are handling the most fragile part of the whole unit. After doing this, you may have direct access to the weight compartment or you may have to do a little more cutting. When you do get into the weight compartment, you can open it up and clean it out. This is where you replace the sash cord unit. Sometimes you just need to repair it buy adding some oil to the pulley that the cord is attached to so it can turn more fluidly though, so you won't actually need to replace it.

Once you see that everything is moving smoothly and you have cleared out any gunk, you are ready to put everything back together. If you did everything in an organized and thought out manner it shouldn't be any problem but it can be difficult to keep track of everything sometimes. After that you will be finished with the project. This can be an easy enough thing to do for those that are more experienced with doing their own projects, but for those that are not, I recommend you get the help of a professional handyman. This type of job will not be expensive at all to complete and should take less than an hour or two. It's especially useful if you ever have several windows that are in need of a new sash cord too.

Overall, you will find that it is not very difficult to repair or replace a sash cord by yourself. There are definitely difficult spots, such as removing the window facing and keeping everything in the proper order, but after doing these things a couple of times you will feel very comfortable doing it again. Also, keep in mind that no matter what happens you always have the option of calling a professional handy man to get the job done for you. They will be able to complete the project much more quickly and they will have all the parts you need. Of course, if they did they will be able to locate them for you.
