Do You Have A Case of Chronic Eczema - By: Rosie Wallace

Usually we can cope with something when we know that it will end. When something recurs over and over however, it is very challenging. For instance your eczema may have responded to a combination of moisturizing and cortisone. The patches finally faded and itching ceased.

Then a month later you start to see a few bumps and get the sickening feeling in your stomach that the dermatitis has returned. This is unfortunately true of chronic eczema. What is helpful is to psychologically not let yourself get into a down mood. Stress only makes physical conditions worse and you don't want to feed the skin problem by compromising your immune system. Don't make things worse as your skin is trying to restore itself.

Can you examine some of the triggers that may have set off your recurrence of bumps? For some people, losing their alertness for home care products means they end up getting products with inferior ingredients, additives, alcohols and other items that may dry the skin out and cause the problem. For other people, there may be something that is allergic in the environment at work or school that sets it off.

Try to hold yourself back from skin scratching. This is hard if you have a severe case, but then you need to find out about antihistamines to enable you to lower the skin sensitivity to the itching feeling. Keep applying moisturizer as well as wet compresses when you want to scratch the skin. Your doctor may also give you a cortisone cream or a course of prednisone to help a severe problem.

Take a close look at what your diet has been. Some have had success by making dietary changes away from sugar, saturated fat and common allergens such as eggs, dairy and wheat. This is not easy for children but there are some good foods you can adapt from the health food aisle of supermarkets today that kids enjoy. Look into flax seed oil as well as supplements that help skin get nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids. Take a good daily vitamin to supplement the fast pace most of us have today that makes us skip the fresh green leafy vegetables that are good for us. Try to cut out caffeine, sodas and foods with dyes in them as some find this leads to improvement in chronic eczema flare ups.
