Do Things Never Go Your Way? Why Your Attitude May Be Your Problem - By: Kari Farmer

You are late for work again and it's all because the idiot driving in front of you is driving slower that molasses. It doesn't help that you couldn't find something to wear because your spouse forgot to do the laundry again! And don't even talk about how there was no milk left for you to have some breakfast this morning! You exclaim 'Things never go my way!' and you believe it to the core. That attitude may be the very reason why it never works out.

Imagine that scenario in a different persons mind. They may have woken up and decided to leave a little bit earlier to work because traffic always seems to be heavy at their normal time. They may have decided what clothes they wanted to wear the night before and put them in the washing machine themselves. They may have even changed up their breakfast routine because there was no milk and actually enjoyed their sandwich that they don't normally have for breakfast. Their mindset may be totally different than yours and therefore they are having a great day that is working out pretty good!

The other person took responsibility for the things they wanted instead of leaving the decision to someone else, and they rolled with the bumps and curves as they popped up along the path of their expected path for the day.

There will always be something like a slow guy driving in front of you, dirty laundry, or no milk to cause a ripple in your perfect plan. Always! Life does not always roll out in front of us just the way we plan. It's how you approach those curveball situations that determine whether or not your day works out for you in the end.

The point is that you can make yourself miserable by approaching life in a blameful and miserable way, or you can always enjoy the outcome by taking responsibility for your actions and approaching life in a more relaxed way.

Taking responsibility for your actions means planning out what you want and doing the things to get you there to the best of your ability. For example, if you know that you are going to need to wear something to work tomorrow then you need to take action to have something to wear tomorrow! You can't expect others to take that action for you, because they have their own priorities to take action towards.

Approaching life in a more relaxed way means turning what life throws at you into something positive that works for you. It means changing your state of mind from 'Well this sucks!' to 'How can I use this to my advantage?' The breakfast is our example for that. Instead of being upset that there is no milk you can look at it as an opportunity to eat something that you really enjoy eating at a time you normally wouldn't eat it.

Obviously breakfast is just a small example of many curveball situations. For instance instead of getting mad about taking the bus because your car broke down you can view it as a time to catch up on your reading, or instead of throwing a fit that your power went out during your TV time you can use the opportunity to catch up with your family.

Taking responsibility for your desires and needs, and taking acting action towards those things, and changing your mindset to look at things as an opportunity rather than an obstacle will allow you to feel as if things are going your way and working out for you more often than not. They are very easy to do once they become a habit in your life, and the outcome is well worth the effort.
