The capital is Mexico city with a population of 125 million people. The most important language is Spanish although English is widely used in the business community.

Mexico's main trading partners are the USA, Canada, Germany, China, Japan and South Korea. It most important industries are food and beverages, tobacco, chemicals, iron and steel, petroleum, mining, textiles, clothing, motor vehicles, consumer durables and tourism.

The country in Latin America that was the most affected by the global economic crisis was Mexico which had a negative -6.5 GDP in 2009. This was due to its heavy dependence on the American market. Thankfully they are slowly recovering and is predicted to show positive growth rates for 2010.

Even though Mexico has been experiencing strong security problems, it remains a solid manufacturing country in the Latin America region thanks to low taxes, less expensive labor and overall cheaper operating costs.

To do business in Mexico, you need to adapt to their customs. Dress conservatively when you attend meeting. If you work in the high technology industry, you can dress in a more relaxed way.

Make sure you arrive on time to your meetings. Most of your potential business partners will usually also arrive on time. Be ready for your meetings to continue into lunch so do not schedule too many meetings in a day.

Doing business in Mexico in focused around building a relationship of trust. Once you have managed that, never change your team member as you will need to start all over again. Keep in mind that you will probably need to make several trips before concluding a deal.

Small gifts can be given although they are usually not expected. More expensive gifts can be given as the relationship gets more serious.
