A PCB, or Printed Circuit Board, is widely used in the electronics industry, for connecting electronic components. Though PCB design and PCB layout is more time consuming and complex than using wire wrapped circuitry, the results achieved are better. Further than this, the process is more economical when taken on an industrial scale.

Ensuring the PCB is well designed is critical to the success of any design project. Though schematic design and the circuitry itself are naturally critical, all will fall over should the PCB not be up to standard. More than this, badly laid out PCBs is likely to generate noise, and cause further challenges further down the timescale.

A popular choice for many designing their own PCBs is to use photo etching. In essence, it is much like exposing a camera film to light to produce an image. A laminate copper board is expose to high levels of UV light which, in turn, transfers even the most complicated of circuitry directly to the board.

This is the popular choice for many DIY enthusiasts of course. However, though software systems and equipment is getting better all the time, it is not quite up to the standards the UK electronics industry has come to expect and, rely on.
