To comply with the standards set out by the DDA, first make sure that you are knowledgeable about the most recent amendments or additions to the Act before taking steps to rectify any non-compliant features of your business location. There are many options to suit the preferences and style of your business, but don’t underestimate the importance of research. These changes to your location aren’t simply to follow code, but to ensure the comfort and ease of access of your customers. Disability lifts are an obvious example if you have any large flights of stairs on site. These enable disabled individuals to reach multiple levels much faster and easier than on-stair lifts, and are preferable for staircases where ramps would become too steep. Another aspect of disability consideration to think about is the space you have available and how to best make use of your space. If you have fewer stairs inside your building, but your site is on an area of irregular terrain, be sure to reflect on how disabled lifts will make reaching your building easier from the start.
