With the digital switchover already begun, and the changeover imminent in many places, many people are being conned into buying brand new TVs prior to the changeover. However, a new TV is not needed, and in fact many people will not only be able to get a signal through their existing TV, but also through their existing aerial.

Whilst newer TVs will have Freeview or Freesat built in, simply purchasing a low-cost set-top box and hooking it up to your current TV is often enough to ensure that you get the full range of channels you can possibly get.

This will be different depending on the area you live in of course, and indeed people with older TV aerials may find themselves needing new ones, but this will always be an aerial issue, never a TV one.

The cost of replacement TV aerials is far lower than a new TV so if you want to find out if you will be okay before the switchover, it is best to buy a set-top box early and check it out. Then, if you can’t receive the quality and quantity of channels you should be, it will simply be a case of calling out the experts to do a simple aerial installation.

It is also worth noting that certain elderly people or those on specific benefits may well be entitled to help during the switchover, and it is worth looking into these options for those who think they may be eligible.

Either way, a new aerial installation will be a quick and easy process and one that is likely to solve any potential problems that may arise during the switch to digital.

So if it is time to buy a new TV, then by all means head out and get one, but if you are happy with the one you have, you need only buy a set-top box before the switchover arrives.
