Digital Signage further improving Restaurant Service - By: Dale Franchise

Digital menu boards are the main use of digital signage technology for the restaurant industry. These menu boards allow for superior menu presentation, customer service, and operational efficiency. They are growing wildly in popularity and seem poised to become a new standard for this industry. But digital menu boards are not the only use of digital signage for restaurants. In fact, new applications stand to raise the bar for fast food and efficient service.

Personalized Menus and Information Storage
With digital signage software, menus can be endlessly manipulated and organized to match the personal preferences and dietary restrictions of individual customers. Through a menu station or even Web software that allows customers to view modified menus through their own Web-enabled devices, a customer can enter this individual profile and make faster, more desirable ordering. This, in turn, creates more efficient service, fewer mistakes, and greater customer satisfaction overall.

For repeat customers, digital signage has a slightly different benefit. Previous menu orders can be stored in the restaurant's digital signage system. Many restaurants do this already, albeit typically with limited applications such as taking delivery orders. New easy-to-use digital signage systems are expanding these applications to include faster take-out ordering and counter-service. Plus, restaurants can give customers access to these previous and stored orders, including modifications. They can even allow customers to make comments or change their orders from last time, again with the end result of faster ordering, fewer mistakes, and better customer satisfaction.

Online and Kiosk Ordering
Again, some restaurants already enable online and/or kiosk ordering thanks to digital signage software, but newer software is improving these capabilities. In essence, more direct ordering eliminates the middle man without reducing the sensibility of full service and convenience. Likewise, instant information updates can reflect supply shortages, daily specials, and other menu alterations. This can help boost sales and reduce the incidence of customers ordering menu items that are out of inventory.

Likewise, digital signage throughout the back of house can improve coordinated food prep and service. Cooks and servers will be on the same page. Secondary displays can help prioritize menu orders and help make the expo's job dramatically easier. Employee communication is also improved and reduces friction amongst staff members. Overall, digital signage has a lot more to offer restaurants than just digital menu boards, and a comprehensive system is likely necessary in the years ahead to maintain a competitive advantage.
