Digital Clock - By: Neil Davidson

A digital clock, as the name suggests, keeps track of time and displays it in a digital format. It is an exact opposite of the analog clocks which have hands to indicated time. The digital feature is not limited to the displaying of the time, the mechanism of such clocks too are based on a digital process. A digital clock can be run on battery or may be mechanical. However, the former variety is more in vogue at present. There are two display modes in a digital clock; the 24 hour mode and the 12 hour mode, with the mention of AM or PM in the latter case.

Digital clocks are a very recent trend but few say that setting time on a digital clock is more brain wracking than in an analog counterpart. This varies on the basis of the design of the digital clock. Digital alarm clocks have become very popular of late. They are mostly available with inbuilt radios or music players. They accurately display time and the alarm too is effective. However, digital clocks without a backup cell sometimes run out soon and fail to function as expected.

Digital clocks are very small and convenient to carry as well. They are not very costly either. These digital clocks are installed in a large number of modern day machines and gadgets like cars, computers, refrigerators, ovens, cells phones and similar things. There are more innovative versions of digital clocks which are built in a way that they are auto-synchronized with the satellite signals or the radio waves. These are effective and more reliable varieties of the digital clock. Whatever be the make, a digital clock has been a revolution of sorts in the world of time keeping and clocks.

The digital clock has its own share of advantages. The first advantage which is evident for all to see is the sleekness of the build of a digital clock. It is compact and is light on the buyer's pocket too. However, the disadvantage of setting a digital clock to DST (daylight saving time) needs all clocks present in the office or home to be adjusted all over again. In the modern versions discussed in the previous paragraph, this problem has been tackled to a large extent though. It shall be a little more time before the digital clock achieves impeccable perfection.

About the Author

A digital clock is available in a wide range of designs like metal, turquoise, wood and acrylic. These can be personalized in any design as the buyer wishes. Different designs of digital clocks suit different parts of the house. The basic categories of a digital clock are the quartz type, the atomic control type and the auto setting type. The first is based on the signal of the quartz crystal. The second is based on the reception of satellite signals (from radio stations). This is the most reliable and accurate among all Digital Clocks. The last have an additional integrated circuit inbuilt with the quartz piece and sets time automatically.
