Different Styles of Bamboo Shades - By: Allan Michael Taylor

For those who are hesitant to buy bamboo shades due to preconceptions of this type of window shades as too ethnic or Asian-looking, there are actually a lot of designs available in stores and online to match every customer's taste in home décor. Aside from being eco-friendly and inexpensive, bamboo is a versatile material that can be altered into any shape and size when it comes to shades. One can even choose among the different types of bamboo and if they are to be treated, laminated, coated with varnish or used as is.

When it comes to window shades, there are two general kinds of bamboo shades available in the market. First type is the Roman style type of bamboo shade. This type is used by those who want to customize their shades to their exact specifications. One can mix and match the type of bamboo to the design and color to create a final product that is one of a kind. For Roman style shades, one can choose matchstick bamboo, bamboo slats, or woven bamboo. Matchstick bamboo are the thin ones that are tied up tightly together. Bamboo slats are bamboo pieces cut into uniform sizes and tied up with rope from rattan, grass or reeds. Woven bamboo on the other hand, continues the tradition of bamboo weaving. This is more intricate and labor intensive and naturally costs more than the other options. Flat or round bamboo or both are used and woven into different patterns and sizes. Whatever type of bamboo you choose, you can still be assured of a unique and elegant window covering for any room of the house.

The second type of bamboo shades is the roll up type. This can be bought more cheaply than the Roman type and is most likely used for the outdoors. Just as its name suggests, this type just simply rolls up (like a sleeping bag) by pulling a cord to let the light in or keep it out. This type uses the matchstick size bamboo. The small bamboo sticks are wrapped together tightly. From afar, they look like long matchsticks woven side by side to make one wooden sheet. As these window shades can be bought cheaply, it is okay to use them outside. One can use them outside large windows in the patio or porch as a shield against the sun or to keep the rain from getting inside. This type is also durable against the wind as it can just pass through between the weave. The simple construction of the shade gives its durability against the elements.

Whether one chooses the Roman type or the roll up type, choose one that is specially treated for a longer life span. With the added treatment, you are sure that the product will last for a long time. You don't have to worry about repairs or replacements for a few years.
