Diets in the West Ain't the Best - By: Dan Brathers

Within the past few years, more and more dietitians have realized that a lot of the western diets haven?t been the healthiest. It has always been encouraged by doctors to eat more vegetables and fruits and to cut back on meat and salt. They have proven to be very correct. Diets that are filled with fried foods, meats and salted snacks have been responsible for over 25 percent of heart attacks in the world when compared to the other diets.

There was a research program that followed the trends of dieting among over 15,000 people that lived in 52 different countries. About 33 percent of the people had already suffered a heart attack when interviewed; the rest had no symptoms of heart disease or any other related ailments.

After this study, the researchers classified the trends of dieting into three different categories: Prudent, which is filled with fruits and vegetables; Oriental, which has more soy, tofu, and different sauces; and Western, which has more fried and salted foods, and meat.

Those who took part of the prudent diet had an over 25 percent decreased chance of developing a heart attack when compared to others who ate no fruit or vegetables at all. Those who were in Western diet had an over 30 percent increased risk of developing a heart attack when compared to those who barely consume fried food or meat. The Oriental diet had very little impact on the rate of developing a heart attack.

It was also noted earlier this year that Western dieting produced more risks of developing heart diseases. It showed that people that eat more portions of meat daily increased a risk of metabolic syndrome by over 25 percent when compared to those who eat meat twice a week. This syndrome increases the chances of developing diabetes and heart related diseases. One can a day of diet soda would increase the risk by nearly 35 percent. Eating fried foods would increase the risk by over 20 percent.
