Diet Product Types - By: Aldrin Zimmerman

Is it difficult for you to breathe after a long walk?? Is it too challenging to climb up the stairs? Do you get overweight quickly? If so, then your body might soon suffer from obesity. Obesity is not only an aesthetic problem but can even result in health problems. Among the worst effects of obesity include hypertension, higher cholesterol levels, and clogged arteries.

Doctors usually prescribe diet supplements to patients going through obesity. The first diet pill appeared in the 1950s as amphetamines. Alas, amphetamines were in reality “speed” or crystal meth, resulting in prolonged addiction and sudden deaths. The severe effects of amphetamines led pharmaceutical companies to develop safer diet pills for the American market. Some of these new diet pills were safe; others were outlawed because of heart- and lung-related side effects.
Modern diet pills work as fat absorption inhibitors and appetite suppressants. They act by influencing the brain’s production of serotonin. The increase of serotonin levels reduces the body’s desire for food. As these pills have major effects on the brain, they should be used with doctor supervision.

Fat absorption inhibitors act by decreasing the cholesterol and oil levels taken in by the body. The fat from meals eaten is pushed out using bowel movements. Among the most popular diet pills is Xenical (generic name orlistat).

Organic diet products provide a safer alternative to the artificial chemicals used in appetite suppressants and fat absorption inhibitors. The safe ingredients used come from plants or organic chemicals that naturally occur in the body.

These pills are available at most online pharmacies and health websites. Before buying any of these products, take note of the ingredients used and their possible side effects. References on the ingredients are available in diet product review sites, which also provide user feedback. Be sure to double check the information.

Diet pills are only recommended to obese people. The drugs are not meant for someone who just needs to lose a few pounds. One can be regarded as obese if his or her Body Mass Index (BMI) goes over 40. A BMI measuring 30 but less than 40 is only overweight. People who are overweight only need regular exercise and a healthy diet to achieve a normal BMI (about 20).
