Diabetes Health Insurance is Available - By: Julia Hanf

Type 2 diabetes patient, James Howard, required constant health care and use of prescription drugs. As with most people who have diabetes the health care costs were quite substantial. In spite of his moderate income, James was not overwhelmed since he was covered by a quality health insurance plan.

The diabetes insurance plan which covered James provided several benefits such as discounts on doctor's visits and prescription drugs. James is one of those fortunate Americans who have made the wise decision of getting this supplemental health coverage. Many others who suffer from this disease are not as fortunate. Unfortunately, in most cases, a person with diabetes will be rejected by the insurer due to the pre-existing condition.

Type 2 diabetes patient George required daily access to supplies such as test strips, meters, and insulin. He also required regular medical checkups. Paying out the cost of prescription drugs, doctor's visit, and the price of accessories was becoming difficult and George worried daily about how he was going to survive the costs. Most of his monthly income was spent towards his medical expenses and his savings were getting hammered. George did not have a diabetes insurance plan to cover his health care expenses.

Financial support provided by diabetes insurance, would have given George the ability to cover his medical expenses. Diabetes insurance would have provided for large discounts towards cost of prescription drugs and doctor's visits. Unfortunately, George was naked in insurance terms.

If you are looking at diabetes health insurance please beware of bad diabetic health insurance plans. Make sure that the diabetes health insurance plan you choose provides patients with reimbursements for covered expenses. Diabetes falls into the "self managed disease" category which means that it requires regular checkups, accessories and prescription drugs. Trying to pay for these items out of pocket can literally bankrupt you. This is why a diabetes health insurance plan is essential.

When looking at insurance policy's you also want to make sure that reimbursement is given to diabetics for items such as test strips, meters, insulin, or prescription drugs.

With the state our economy is in diabetes health insurance has become even more important. Understanding the needs of diabetics has led the American Diabetes Association to come out with a report on the need of accessible, affordable, and adequate diabetes insurance. Unfortunately type 2 diabetes is occurring in younger and younger people. It is no longer a disease that affects the elderly.
