Situated on the River Ex in the stunning South West county of Devon, the city of Exeter offers the perfect day out or holiday destination for all the family. Exeter is bursting with historical character with a diverse array of architecture, from the majestic Gothic Cathedral to the mysterious medieval passages which run underneath the city. Those who are looking for some retail therapy can head to Princesshay Shopping Centre, a popular place with visitors since it opened in 2007. Exeter’s close proximity to the coast means that it’s just a short drive away from building sand castles and walking along the rugged cliff tops.

Historical Sites:
Exeter has a deep historical background that’s evident as you walk along the high street with its medieval buildings and grand Cathedral which dominates the city’s skyline.

Exeter Cathedral is the Cathedral church of Saint Peter, originates from the Norman time. Construction started in 1114 and It took over 250 years to build until it was completed in 1375. Throughout the centuries it has developed into a Gothic-style building where the two magnificent towers are the main survivors of the original construction. Its treasures include a volume of the Domesday Book and the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon literature in existence.

Castle Drogo is a country house near Drewsteignton, Exeter. It was the last castle to be built in England (in the 1910’s and 1920’s) and was built for Julius Drewe, a successful local businessman. It is situated at a height of nearly 300 metres set above the Teign Gorge with dramatic views overlooking Dartmoor. Its height means that it consequently experiences severe weather conditions.

Powderham Castle, a popular wedding venue, is located beside the River Exe. Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay, it has remained in the same family to this day and is currently home to the 18th Earl of Devon. The castle was restored after it was severely damaged in the Civil War. It regularly holds guided tours with historical information about the castle.

Local Gardens:
Tucked away in the centre of Exeter are some hidden flora gems that offer a sanctuary of calm for Exeter visitors and if you head to the outskirts of Exeter you will find secluded valley gardens.

Northernhay Gardens are the oldest public gardens in the UK. They were quarried in the Roman times for stone to build the adjacent city walls. They were laid out by the City Chamber for the public recreation at an unusually early date of 1612. Like Powderham Castle, the park was destroyed in the Civil War and then restored in 1664. Since then it has been a continuous tradition to maintain the park as a major city amenity.

Bicton Park Botanical Gardens are grade 1 listed historic gardens set in east Devon’s picturesque Otter Valley, between the ancient city of Exeter and South West England’s Jurassic Coast. This fabulous landscaped park combines 18th Century tranquillity with modern amenities. Younger visitors can enjoy the Bicton Woodland Railway train ride, nature trail, maze, mini golf and indoor and outdoor children’s play complexes.
