Developing Your Own List Or Using Safelists -- That Is The Question - By: jeff9pxpre

Having a list that you can send your offers to is one of the most essential things you can do to help ensure your online success. Having a mailing list to send your offers to everyday or even every couple of days can make or break your Internet business. I have been in the IM scene for over 5 years and one question that constantly comes up is "I use safelists, should I be using my own list?"

I am going to go a little deeper in this article on how email marketing should be carried out.

Let's start off with safelists. A safelist is a membership site made up of hundreds or even thousands of people who are into Internet marketing. How it works is you can ordinarily join for free or for a fee. When you register, you agree to be sent emails from other people in the safelist. Generally, each email you get will contain something referred to as a credit link that you must click on to earn credits, this is known as a credit based safelist. At this point, you can trade your credits for sending out mailings to other members, and when they receive your email they must click the credit link to get credits and they see your website when they do.

Remember that these other members are the same as you -- they want to email people and get traffic but they don't wish to buy something that another member is telling them about. Frankly, you can make money selling goods on safelists, but you're not going to make a living selling on safelists.

These safelists can be employed for other forms of marketing which are worthwhile. Safelists are a fantastic way to start developing your own mailing list. You just offer something of value for free in exchange for people's email addresses. This is the least complicated way to start growing your own mailing list.

Which takes us to the question "Do I need my own mailing list?" Yes you do, at least if you want to succeed. If you ask anyone who has been in Internet marketing for a while they will tell you that you can generate approximately $1 per month for every person you have on your own list. So let's say over the next 12 months you work hard at growing your mailing list and you get 3,000 people to join, your email list is now worth $3,000 each month.

This however doesn't mean that everyone on your list sends you $1 a month. What this means is when you contact your email list with a good subject line and good content in the email advertising a good product, you can expect to make about 1 sale for every 50 people on your mailing list each month. To explain this much better, 1 person out of every 50 purchases a product worth $50 to you each month, that equals an average of $1 per person.

Another thing about maintaining your own list instead of using a safelist is you can send out your offers anytime you like. And unlike safelists that restrict your mailings and the number of people you can mail to, you can build your list as big as you want and email them whenever you prefer. Plus, you are not limited on how you build your email list, feel free to employ any method you want. Safelists are merely one way to help you get started. You can create a blog and have people sign up to your mailing list to be updated when you have a new post. List building is only limited by your imagination, you can build it anytime. In essence, the sky is the limit when it comes to building a list.

And so back to the basic question on what type of list must you use, whether you should develop your own or use safelists. Again, safelists are fantastic for helping you grow your own email list, but building your own list needs to be your priority.
