Desks are probably one of the most maligned pieces of furniture we have. - By: Punjabi Sunil

Desks have been around in one form or another since the 1600's. In those days, they were more commonly known as bureaus. Bureaus had a sloping front, which was the writing surface, and this lifted to reveal storage space for ink and writing implements. The bureau was popular throughout the 18th century. In the 1702 - 1714 period, Queen Anne desks became extremely popular. These essentially were a small table with drawers on either side of a kneehole. Many of the Queen Anne style desks were veneered or made of solid oak.

During the 1770's, the pedestal desks we know now became popular. In later years, they became part of office life, and the desk a man had was often a status symbol and indicator of rank within the office or business. Today, desks are something many homes have; from genuine antique to a faux antique style, or plain, no nonsense functional items. Desks are items we cannot really do without. You may think you don't need one in your home but you are sure to have a use for one.

We all remember the old school desks, covered in graffiti and stuck up with chewing gum. Our school lives flash before our eyes at the mention of desks! It is maybe why you have one at home because you sit at one all day at work. Well imagine a beautiful solid piece of wood, warm, tactile and beautiful. Now imagine that as your desktop, it's a very different image to that of school or work desks.

So, to address the thought that you don't need any desks of any description just think of the next few questions. Where do your children do their homework? Do they slump on the sofa; paper spread everywhere, getting ink on your precious leather? Do you have a computer or laptop? If you do where do you use it. The kitchen table or breakfast bar as I do. How much nicer would these activities be if you or the kids sat at beautiful desks.

You may just want to consider a computer desk. That's fine; just don't go for one of that flat pack, flimsy metal ones. Maybe you work from home and have an office in one of the rooms of your house. How lovely would it be to sit at a beautiful wooden desk to conduct your business? There are cleverly designed desks that allow you to hide away your computer equipment when not in use. This isn't just tidy; it provides security, as you don't have expensive kits on display. Go look at some desks, and shatter the image of school and work desks.
